Ms. Ears Questions and AnswersQuestions about Assistive Listening Devices (Ald's) from real people and answered by real audiologists
QUESTION: I can hear low frequency sounds (about 250Hz) but I can't communicate by telephone. I can't hear the telephone ringing sound or other things with a higher frequency. Is there a hearing aid device for me? ANSWER: There are devices available for visually alerting you when a telephone rings by flashing a lamp or light. However, by the description you give, it sounds like you have a very profound hearing loss. You have probably tried hearing aids before without much success. I might suggest trying a TTY/TTD for telephone conversations. The only other recommendation I would have, would be to see if you qualify for a Cochlear Implant. For more information about Cochlear Implant products you can look up the web site at http://www.cochlear.com. Thank you for your question. Sincerely, Ms. Ears. QUESTION: My elderly mother refuses to consider hearing aids, however I think she would use an ear trumpet. I have been unsuccessful in locating a source for inexpensive ear trumpets. Do you know where I can get one? ANSWER: It's too bad that your mother will not consider hearing aids, as the family also suffers from a loved ones hearing difficulties. I have also been looking for an ear trumpet and have not found one yet. Another idea you might want to consider trying is the pocketalker. A pocketalker is about the size of a walkman and comes with headphones and a microphone for speech input. Your mother could have it available for those times when she is having difficulty hearing or when a family member feels the need to be understood. Pocketalkers cost around $160 US and can be used by anyone. Thank you for your question, looking forward to hearing from you again. Sincerely, Ms. Ears. QUESTION: I'm interested in getting headphones with an attached mike with adjustable frequency (sliders as found in stereo set ups). I think this would be ideal for concerts and watching movies at home and at the cinema. I have a 7-frequency equalizer in my car stereo. I turn the high frequency up to max. It's great for me, although other members of my family can't stand it for long. I spent over $3000 CDN in 1996 on 2 internal AudioZoom with WDRC remote but found them too fiddly to use and they blocked the good hearing I have below 1500Hz. The good news is I got a full refund. I'm down over 70 dB above 3500 Hz. and have been since I was a teenager in the 50's due to model rocket fuel blowing up within 2 feet of me. A year or so later a shotgun blast inside a car added to the damage. ANSWER: I don't know of any headphones that have "sliders" built into them. For watching TV, run the sound of your TV into your stereo and use the sliders on your stereo to adjust the sound just as you would in your car. You might want to try some of the new digital hearing aids that I think will better respond to your hearing loss. The Phonak Claro digital BTE hearing aid can be worn without blocking the good hearing you have in low frequencies. Thank you for your question. I hope this information helps. Sincerely, Ms. Ears.
