Ms. Ears Questions and AnswersQuestions about General Hearing, Impairment and Protection from real people and answered by real audiologists
QUESTION: Hi there. I had impressions made of my ears, as I want to get some ER15s made for them. I work in a loud environment and want to protect my ears. In the UK, where I am at the moment, they are very expensive. Can I get these made in the USA? ANSWER: Any audiologist should be able to order the ER15s (I know I can). I have a pair made for my ears and they are great. In Canada the retail cost is about $155 Cdn a pair. If you have difficulty finding a place to order them from, let me know and I will order them for you. Sincerely, Ms. Ears. QUESTION: A friend of mine has a fullness and buzzing in her one ear when she is in an upright position, but it disappears when she lies down. There is also a definite hearing loss somewhere in the moderate range. Her ENT didn't help her too much. What would you suggest it might be? ANSWER: The symptoms you describe, fullness in the ear with buzzing and positional relief or increase, would be associated with something in the cochlea and semicircular canals. I don't know exactly what is going on with your friend's hearing, but I would suggest a second medical opinion from an ENT doctor. Also, your friend might want to see a medical doctor specializing in dizziness testing. Good luck to your friend. Sincerely, Ms. Ears. QUESTION: What causes you to hear your heartbeat in your ear? ANSWER: Our ears are very sensitive. The eardrum reacts to very small movements in the air which we cannot fell on our skin, but which the ear picks up. Most people will hear their heartbeats when they go into a very quiet room. Because the ear is so sensitive, it is able to pick up the pulses from our bodies. If you are hearing a loud pulse all the time, you should go see your doctor. Sincerely, Ms. Ears. QUESTION: Do you have any information on hair cell regeneration? ANSWER: There are two different articles that I have come across regarding hair cell regeneration. They can be found at http://www.hearingcenteronline.com/techc.shtml and http://www.sfn.org/briefings/hair_cell.html. I hope this helps. Sincerely, Ms. Ears. QUESTION: I had a whiplash-type neck injury C5/6, C3/4, C6/7-bulging. Could this cause ear-ringing with a stuffy-like head while exercising? ANSWER: The short answer is YES. Your doctor can explain the long answer of where the nerves travel and how they may be pinched and what can happen when you exercise. You may want to consult an ENT doctor to see if you can get any relief. Sincerely, Ms. Ears. To continue to the next page of Ms. Ears questions on Hearing Aids click here.
